AS STILL AS A BROOM
Love as still as a broom
leaning against a fireplace.
All the carpets swept,
all the ashes grated.
And the candles burned
down to the black wires.
And the windows frosted
starless, moonless.
No shoes under the bed,
no towel on the floor.
Only the crease in the pillow
and a smell I can’t remember.
