Woman of Manhattan

WOMAN OF MANHATTAN

O, woman of Manhattan,
you are my Kamala.

You teach me of olives
and cool wine.

You bathe my eyes
with musk and tamarind.

Your hands are the flow
of waves and warm wind.

Your voice, the lure
of a thousand streetlamps.

I follow in your wake,
slaked by your white smile.

Stanley H. Barkan

Notes on "When Love Falls"

Stanley Barkan insists that poems should not need explanation and cannot have an explanation. They just are. Does it help to know that "Kamala" means "lotus" and is another name for the Indian goddess of wealth, Laxmi?

Stanley Barkan is a passionate proponent of cross-cultural communications.
